It was a bit strange when Apple Inc. invested 1 billion dollars in Didi, the Chinese Ride-Hailing Company, since they are not in the same domain. But months after that it was getting clear that this was a strategic step, especially when news shed the light on the possibility of using Apple Music inside Didi’s cars.
Facebook is also another example, the company which started without a monetizing model figured out that Ads could be the one, which allowed them to mark their first profits in 2009.
The list could goes on and on, and that’s just to show that in 2017 a lot of monetizing models are not the same with the project’s idea. If we look back at Facebook, the logical model would be monthly subscriptions.
When you think about your project don’t just treat it as a single thing, think broader, make it a whole platform. How? let’s look at restaurants which normally make money by selling food. Now when you visit any one you will see inside the menu or on the table runner and ad for a Water, Bread, or a soft drink. And that’s a pure example for a platform.
